Our summer BBQ will take place on July 5, 2008. Guests will enjoy fantastic food, indoors and outdoors activities and great company. Our BBQ is a great place to network in a casual atmosphere. ·         PRACT Website Design Competition

Pacific Rim Actuaries’ Club of Toronto is pleased to announce its Website Design Competition. The contest is open to all, and the grand prize to the winner is $500.

·         Annual Chinese New Year Dinner

Our annual Chinese New Year Dinner took place on Thursday, February 21, 2008, at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto.  We were pleased to have invited Mr. Nick Dumbreck, FIA, President of the Institute of Actuaries and a consulting actuary with Watson Wyatt Worldwide in London, UK to be our guest speaker of this event.

·         Business Workshop

Our next series of business workshops will be held at the Manulife building (200 Bloor St. East) on November 19th, and repeated on November 27th at 6 p.m. The topic of this workshop will be Professional Communication. Please see the registration form for more details.

 

·         Annual Fall Dinner Meeting

Our 2007 annual fall dinner meeting will take place on September 20, 2007 at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto. This year we are excited to invite two great speakers -- Mr. Keith Walter (SVP Sales and Marketing at MFC Global Investment Management) and Mr. Tahnoon Pasha (Head of Investments HK Office, MFC Global Investment Management) to talk to us about investing in China. ·         Business Workshop

Our next series of business workshops will be held at Manulife Toronto on December 5th, and repeated on December 13th.  (Please note the date change)  The topic is Networking and Relationship Building and the workshops are from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Click here for details.

·         CIA Communication Skills Training

The CIA is putting on a Communication Skills Training seminar at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel on the morning of December 13th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.  All actuaries and anyone working for an actuary may attend this seminar.  Click here for details.

·         Our Annual Fall Dinner Meeting is coming up on Wednesday, September 20th, 2006.  Our guest speaker is Robert F. Conger, a well-known P&C actuary who will be speaking on the actuarial profession and general insurance in China.  Click here for details.  

·         Voting for the 2006 SOA Election is now open until the polls close on August 21, 2006 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.  We would like to make you aware that the president of our club, Bosco Chan (biography), is running for the International Section Council.  Our club continues to encourage all eligible members to vote for the candidates who they support.  You may also help the profession by encourage your actuarial friends and colleagues to vote. ·         Three exciting events coming up for the rest of 2006:

o        Business workshops: the topic is “Conflict Management Encore”.  We have been asked whether these workshops qualify for the CIA CPD requirements and in many situations they do qualify.  The workshop dates are June 20th and 26th, 2006.

o        Summer BBQ: this popular event will take place on July 8th, 2006.

    • Fall Meeting: this exciting dinner meeting will feature Robert Conger of Towers Perrin in Chicago.  The tentative meeting date is Sep 14th, 2006.

·         On February 16th, 2006, we had our Annual Chinese New Year Dinner at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto.  We were pleased to invite Mr. Jean-Louis Massé, President of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) to be our guest speaker of this event.  Click here for details.

·         On September 15th, 2005, we had our Annual General Meeting at Metropolitan Hotel.  Speaker: Mr. Leslie Lohmann, President of Lohmann International Associates, Tokyo, Japan.  Click here for details.

·         The Pacific Rim Actuaries' Club encourages you to vote in the SOA election!  We have two committee members who are participating in the election this year:

o        Catherine Lyn is running for the International section council.  She is currently the Immediate Past-President of our Club.  You can view Catherine's bio by clicking here.

    • Bosco Chan is running for the Pension section council.  He is currently the President of our Club.  You can view Bosco's bio by clicking here.

The ballot will open on July 6 and close at 5:00pm Central Time on August 1.  If you are a member of any SOA 's section, you will receive an email from the SOA which informs you about the voting procedure around July 6.  To learn more about the election and other candidates, you may visit the SOA home page at www.soa.org and go to the election section.

As a professional body, it is very important for us to cast our votes on people who can represent us.  As SOA is expanding internationally, especially in the Pacific Rim region, our participation sends a positive message to SOA.

  • On February 15th, 2005, we had our Annual Chinese New Year Dinner at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto.  It featured a talk by Mr. Raymond Chang, Chairman of CI Fund Management Inc. Click here to learn about this event. 
  • On November 24th, 2004, we had our Autumn Actuarial Event, presented jointly by the Actuaries Club of Toronto and Pacific Rim Actuaries' Club of Toronto.  Guest Speaker: Brian Fitzgerald, CIA President.
  • Read an article about the talk by Chris Daykin, UK government actuary, at our club on February 20th, 2004, in the August 2004 issue of the The Actuary.
  • On September 24th, 2004, we had our Annual General Meeting at Szechuan Szechuan.  Photos will be posted later.
  • On Saturday, July 24th, 2004, we had our Summer BBQ.  Photos will be posted later.

·         Congratulations to our president, Catherine Lyn, who was appointed as editor of the SOA's International Section Council Newsletter.

·         Highlights of the SOA election:

  • On Friday, February 20th, 2004, we held our Annual Chinese New Year Dinner at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto.  Almost 150 attendees celebrated the Year of the Monkey with a fabulous feast and an informative talk by Mr. Chris Daykin, the Government Actuary for the United Kingdom.
